A Bit Of The Great Outdoors!

I went out again to where the Herons are nesting, hoping to get a better shot of one. No such luck! They pretty much stayed in and behind the trees. I did, however, have the good fortune of a Red-tail Hawk flying overhead. Actually, there were two of them, but only one got close enough to get any decent pictures.
I thought they turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself! LOL
Sooner or later, I'm going to get a good shot of one of the Blue Herons!
Yesterday, I was out and about again, just not out as far. I only went a couple of miles out into the country northeast of here. The pic above is a male Mallard Duck flying. I didn't get a good enough shot, so I cropped it and played around with the shadowing to get this effect. It kinda looks like a painting.
There were some Canadian Geese out on the same pond. I got them as they were flying away.
A couple more miles northeast of the waterfowl shots, I found these horses. I see them all the time, but they are usually up close to the barn, so I can never get any good shots of them. There were three females and one male. The small one in the roundpen is a female. The Paint horse is the male.
The male was really irritating this female. I don't know if she was the only one in heat, or simply that she was much smaller than all the others.
I got a few shots of her back kicking at him.
And in these two, he found it necessary to bite her on the butt! I would have kicked him too!
And she did!
He just absolutely refused to leave her alone!
She started to walk away, but I think he must have been taunting her again.
So, she rared up at him and kicked at him that way.
Then, he decided that two could play that game. She finally walked away to where he couldn't get to her.
After I got home, I was out in the back yard shooting birds and squirrels. I left the back door open so Salem could be his usual nosey self. He wanted out bad! He is not allowed outside.
This pretty little Purple Finch was up in my cherry tree just singing away. He has a very pretty song.
This Gray Squirrel was in one of my Maple trees. Not exactly sure what he was eating. There aren't any oak trees in the near vicinity.
While I was out at the pond, on my way home, I noticed several of these black globs attached to blades of grass or other vegetation. It is frog eggs.
There should be thousands of tadpoles very soon.
Before I went out on my mini safari, I saw a bird that really shocked me for being in this area. I took pictures, but it was simply too far away to get a recognizable picture. It was some kind of gull. I tried to look it up in my book, but not being able to see much of the bird, I couldn't identify it. It was all white, with the tips of the wings being black. I couldn't see the color of the head or the feet. I'm pretty sure the tail was all white as well.
I'm gonna get off here for now. Chuck will be home tonight. He wasn't originally supposed to be,as he was supposed to be hauling a load of paper from Canton, NC to Franklin, OH, but when he got to Canton, he found out that his trailer was leaking rain water, so they refused to load him. So, he has to come back empty, then pick up a trailer and head back down to Johnson City, TN.
Everybody have a great rest of the week.

Lisa those pics of the horses are fantastic! I've never seen you take a bad picture, they are always great. The one of the duck does look like a painting.

Thanks for sharing and have a great rest of the week.

I'm still amaised that you can capture a picture of the birds flying like that. Everytime I try I get a blue. same goes for my cats.. I havde to take a sleeping pic or about 10 to get one that looks good. The redtail hawk turned otu great! and so clear. wonderful!

What a lot of frogs you'll have soon. I hope most of the eggs hatch and thrive.

I had a pair of redtails soaring over the house last weekend. I love to watch them. You have so many great photos on this post. The horses are funny. Flirting in kind of a violent way;)

Hi Marnie
You have no idea how bad I wanted to scoop up some of the eggs and bring them home. I guess it's a good thing I didn't have any kind of container with me, or I probably would have! But I don't know where I would have put them. I don't have any standing water around the house!

Lisa, I always love your nature shots and I especially got a "kick" out of the horse pictures. LOL..."Leave me alone!".. Herons are real real skittish. We have a pair on the lake and a lot of times they light on the dock for a while. As soon as I open the door (super quietly) they fly off. Never been able to get a good shot of them. :)

I wonder if any of those frog eggs are of bull frog descent? I love their song, but it can be very loud. Speaking of song, did you hear any high lonesome whistle from the Red Tail hawks? I love their call, it reminds me of Tucker Holler, KY.

No, I didn't get to hear them this outing. The only time I've ever heard them is when I was out at my friend, Nila's house. I did, however get to hear an owl hooting in broad daylight while I was out there. I love that sound! While I was out there, a guy stopped and was talking to me. He invited me to his house (only about a mile from where I was) to see the Pileated Woodpecker. I didn't go that day, but I might another day. I've never seen one yet. Only the Red-bellied and Downey variety.

You got soem great 'action' shots of those horses! Mean ole male, wasn't he? But she stayed there, taking his abuse for a while, though, didn't she? Glad he didn't hurt her....They can bite one another quite badly.

Loved the pic of your Salem!!! He looks like my daughter's Buster did when he was younger. I am so glad that you don't allow him outside. It is really dangerous for cats to be outside now....I keep all of mine indoors, too!

Oh, those frog eggs!!! You are going to have toins of tadpoles! I remember catching those things when I was a kid! LOL

Have a great weekend, Lisa!

Hey Lisa, yes I did miss this post, don't know why.

The paint in the horse pictures was probably a stallion and he was harassing the mare because she was in heat. The others were likely geldings (castrated males) or mares that they wanted to be bred by him. This is perfectly normal behavious for horses however I cringe when I see them rearing up wit the barriers between them. When our your stud Blue was 18 months old I had him out in the turnout and I had his Daddy our other stallion in the roundpen which is in this area and I found the young horse hanging by his front leg which had wedged between two of the panels when he was playing with his father. He had obviously got his front legs over the top of the rails and because the gaps between the panels werent wide enough his leg slipped in but not through so he was hanging there fortunately being calm. I tended tht wound for 4 - 5 months through one of the coldest winters we have had. The vet wanted to put him down because he had damaged his joint above the hoof so badly but I wouldn't let him and I nursed him every day. It happened the day before Xmas two years ago and the temps those two mornings were -6F and -8F so you can imagine me having to try to get the wound cleaned every day and soaked, dressed and bandaged.

My point being I suppose is that I NEVER let the stallions and mares have cntact with each other directly even with a fence or barrier between because I couldnt bear to have that happen again.

Those horse pics are fantastic. She must be getting in heat and that's probably why he can't leave her alone. The frog spawn is fantastic. I had a great time here.

Lisa: Really neat shots, did you color that hawks wings? I never saw one in blue.

raccoonlover1963/Lisa Myers said...

Hi Tom
No, I didn't color the wings. I didn't even enhance the pic on photoshop, only tagged it. Thanks for the comments.

John, thank you for stopping by. Sorry I'm just getting around to leaving a comment.
